Product

Google Files launched as 'Files Go' in 2017 as a staple utility of Android Go, the lightweight OS Google launched for budget hardware in developing markets. Since standard Android also lacked a first-party file manager and OEM solutions were shoddy at best, Files Go graduated to Google Files and shipped as the default file browser for Android users globally.

Prior to launch, I helped level up the app's appeal from a dull, sterile utility to a polished, Material-compliant product complete with an adorable mascot that users genuinely coveted as part of their Android experience. To this day, Google Files averages ~3.4M daily downloads and holds a 4.5+ Play Store rating across 8.5M reviews.

Opportunity

For users, research across developing markets revealed near-daily compromises around two highly consequential limitations: storage and mobile data costs. Users were consistently stressed by storage constraints, frequently deleting and reinstalling apps just to complete single tasks. Additionally, the workarounds they'd invented for sharing images, videos, and apps without burning through expensive data were inconvenient and highly frictionful.

For the Android ecosystem, file management was a problem left entirely to OEMs, and it showed. With premium markets as their focus, most OEMs had little incentive to invest here, leaving a huge share of Android users to use clunky work arounds or download risky third-party solutions.

CONTRIBUTIONS

• Led app architecture and visual design for the initial release candidate
• Guided product team through Material Design’s review and approval processes
• Co-created and animated Tidy, the beloved Google Files mascot

BIG TAKEAWAY

Delight isn't decoration, it's what users remember and return for.
